Members of Salisbury City Residents Action on Packaging (SCRAP) have enlisted the support of local Lib Dem Euro-MP Graham Watson in their campaign to make Salisbury a plastic bag free (PBF) city.
An estimated 150 million plastic bags are used in Britain every week and can take up to 500 years to decompose. SCRAP wants shops in Salisbury to provide more environmentally friendly bags and help change the mindset of customers. They already have the support of a number of shops, including the chains Holland and Barrett and Julian Graves.
The group will tomorrow (1 September) launch a survey of local businesses on the issue, and Watson has taken the fight to Europe by writing to all 26 member state's ambassadors to the EU.
Watson said;
"I was hugely impressed to hear about SCRAP's efforts to rid Salisbury of plastic bags. The EU has played an important role in cleaning up the environment, but community-led action like this is proven to make a direct and visible difference.
"I was only too happy to be part of the campaign and write to all EU member states about it. I want to find out what is being done across Europe to tackle this awful problem. I hope this Wiltshire-based campaign will encourage towns and cities from Salisbury to Cyprus to go plastic bag free."
