MEP urges climate action to mitigate future Pakistan floods

Replying to EU Development Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva at an extraordinary committee meeting in the European Parliament in Brussels today, SW LD MEP Graham Watson said:
'The EU must find ways of getting aid faster to those in need. Europe has responded generously to the humanitarian disaster in Pakistan, but money committed needs to be disbursed faster to help those in need.
'Moreover, until Europe has a concerted and co-ordinated policy to combat climate change and help poorer countries to mitigate its impact, such tragedies will hit us more frequently and with greater impact. Urgent action is needed to prevent further climate change and the EU must take a lead.'
Mr Watson paid tribute to the individuals and organisations working hard to help overcome the difficulties caused by Pakistan's floods.
