Graham Watson MEP, a Lib Dem member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, has called upon the EU, member states and countries around the world to do more to help victims of the floods in Pakistan.
Watson commented;
"The people of Pakistan are facing a crisis of epic proportions. The floods that first hit the north-west of the country have left 6 million people in urgent need of food, fresh drinking water and shelter, with this number set to rise as fast as the flood waters. There are also huge fears about the spread of disease over the next few weeks.
"Perhaps it is because the situation has evolved over a two week period, but the response from the international community has not been good enough. More must be done to provide immediate assistance to those affected before it is too late.
"I am pleased that the EU pledged €10m on top of the €30m of humanitarian aid given to Pakistan last month, but it is time the international community stepped up a gear. I call upon the Commission to ensure that the EU leads the way at this crucial time and delivers the assistance our partners in Pakistan require.
"Pakistan is an important ally and will need support over a number of years to recover. We must make sure that as the story slips further down the news headlines this need does not slip from people's minds."
